Transfusion medicine

The Department of Anaesthesiology is in charge of handling the transfusion-medical supply of the Schüchtermann-Klinik. Its tasks comprise the provision of blood products as well as the performance of blood-group serological and immunohaematological examinations offering a 24-hour service. Transfusion management is responsibly handled and organised by the physician in charge of transfusion services, who is a specialist in transfusion medicine. Each medical Speciality Division has an appointed transfusion specialist, i.e. a physician, who advises the wards on all questions of transfusion medicine. A physician in charge of quality management for transfusion medicine continuously supervises full compliance with the high requirements regarding transfusion quality.

Your own blood is best for you

As we intend to administer as little foreign blood to our patients as possible during the course of their treatment, we apply various blood-saving processes in the Schüchtermann-Klinik:

  • surgery techniques requiring less blood
  • autologous blood donation in cooperation with the blood donation centre of the DRK institute in Springe
  • „blood thinning“ immediately before surgery (haemodilution)
  • application of blood-processing techniques (Cell Saver)

Thanks to these techniques as well as a rather hesitant determination of indications regarding the necessity of blood transfusions, we generally administer less foreign-blood preservations to our patients during cardiac surgery than is customary on a nation-wide average.

Coorperation

If nevertheless it becomes necessary to give foreign blood or specific blood constituents
(e. g. blood platelet concentrate), the Schüchtermann-Klinik will always use blood products that owing to the removal of the white blood cells exceed the quality of usual preparations. In close cooperation with the blood donation centre of the DRK institute in Springe and the hospital pharmacy of the Franziskus Hospital Harderberg we keep all required blood products available so as to have them at our disposal in high quality when needed.

All procedures related to transfusion medicine being used in the Schüchtermann-Klinik are bindingly regulated and documented in a comprehensive Quality Management Manual for Haemotherapy.
