Chest Pain Unit (CPU)

A Chest Pain Unit (CPU) attends to patients with non-specific chest pain. The first few hours after suffering a heart attack or other cardiovascular event are decisive for the outcome and the long-term prognosis of the disease. That is why all the procedures performed in the CPU focus on winning the risky race against time, identifying the origin of the symptoms as soon as possible and initiating appropriate measures immediately.

Patients with non-specific chest pain reach the CPU directly, e.g. by ambulance. Examination, treatment and nursing rooms as well as a special heart emergency room facilitate a fast and targeted care. High-risk patients, in particular, benefit from the close connection with the diagnosis and therapy areas of the hospital in terms of facilities and staff (cardiac catheterisation labs, echocardiography, MRT, electrophysiological laboratory, intensive care units and cardiosurgical operating theatres). In cases without pathological findings, i.e. if neither a discernible risk nor a severe heart disease is found to be present, the patients can quickly be relieved of their worries and discharged to go home.

Diagnostics and therapy on the CPU follow the recommended directives of the national and international medical associations and have been recorded in clinical treatment paths. The patients are attended to by highly qualified and specialised personnel. The CPU of the Schüchtermann-Klinik has been certified by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie - Herz- and Kreislaufforschung e.V. (DGK, German Cardiac Society).

The CPU ward was inaugurated in April 2010 and has 4 treatment and observation places on a total area of over 500 m². The conveniently furnished double rooms with state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a private bathroom are situated right next to all cardiological diagnostic and intervention facilities.
