PREVENTION AND AFTERCARE OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES

In the interests of prevention, examinations are carried out that are helpful in detecting diseases of the cardiovascular system before an adverse event occurs. Recognising and treating risk factorsresulting from lifestyle and genetic predispositions is important in this context.

PRIMARY PREVENTION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING EXAMINATIONS:

  • Documentation of family history, especially concerning diseases affecting first-degree relatives
  • Survey of dietary habits and sporting activities
  • Laboratory results such as blood lipids (cholesterol, LDL/HDL cholesterol), atherogenic index, blood sugar, HbA1c, lipoprotein a, homocysteine and fibrinogen
  • Exercise ECG
  • Blood pressure measurement (if necessary long-term blood pressure measurement, blood pressure measurement under stress)
  • Measurement of the physical constitution by means of calculation of the Body Mass Index (BMI) and the body composition, as well as measurement of the abdominal circumference
  • Echocardiography

AFTERCARE

For heart/vascular patients we recommend an up-to-date medical review (e.g. ECG, bloods, echocardiogram, exercise test, possibly ultrasound of vessels, if necessary further diagnostics with all of the examination methods available in a large heart centre). Alternatively, or in addition, preliminary findings from the treating cardiologists or general physicians can be brought along. The aim of treatment is to adjust all existing risk factors to minimise risk by means of lifestyle changes and drug therapy.

It is true for both prevention and aftercare that training tailored to the individual’s ability is suitable for improving physical performance in the medium and long term. Based on scientifically proven and guideline-based methods, it is possible to determine exercise intensity and duration tailored to the individual’s ability and give advice on the type of sport that makes sense for the particular situation.

The basic data needed to create a personalised training plan is collected during a lactate performance test orspiro-ergometry.
