The Cardiac Surgery department of the Schüchtermann-Klinik, which features 18 intensive care beds, 5 operating theatres and a daily average of 12 surgeries using the heart-lung machine ranks among the five largest German cardiac centres.

The Cardiac Surgery department of the Schüchtermann-Klinik essentially contributes to an improvement of the cardiac care in the North German territory, particularly regarding emergencies with a threatening heart attack or acute cardiac failure.

The scope of the Cardiac Surgery department covers the entire field of cardiac surgery in adults with the exception of heart transplantations. Every year we perform approx. 3,000 surgical interventions using the heart-lung machine plus another 400 emergency surgeries on the large vessels, the thorax and the abdomen.

The close cooperation with the adjacent Cardiology results in our activities focussing on the interdisciplinary treatment of acute heart attacks and the direct admission of cardiogenically unstable patients from the catheterisation laboratory. In cooperation with the Cardiology department all types of pacemakers and defibrillators (AICD) are implanted.

Under the menu item "Details on the Speciality Division" we present our range of surgeries, the interdisciplinary job profile in the field of cardiotechnical services, our surgical intensive care unit and the range of duties of surgical assistants.
