An effective clinical research nowadays is guaranteed only by networking highly specialised centres and in cooperation with institutes of the basic sciences.

Accordingly, in 2000 the Institute for heart and vascular research at the University of Witten-Herdecke was founded by the cardiac centres of Osnabrück-Bad Rothenfelde, Duisburg, Wuppertal, the St.-Johannes-Hospital Dortmund and the University of Witten/Herdecke under the sponsorship of the Association to promote the heart and vascular research at the University of Witten/Herdecke e.V.
