Remain active after rehab – in the cardiac group
“If you rest you rust” – In accordance with this motto, the members of the outpatient cardiac group meet regularly to do sport together and remain fit. The “Schüchtermann-Klinik e.V.” outpatient cardiac group is an independent association that was founded in October 1989. Within the past 25 years the number of active members has risen from 45 to the current level of 280.
WHAT DOES THE OUTPATIENT CARDIAC GROUP DO?
The group would like to make it easier for its members to come to terms with their illness and to positively influence their health over the long term. The aim is not only to improve cardiovascular function, but also to achieve psychosocial stabilisation. The aim of the meetings is not to achieve top sporting performance: instead, members should only subject themselves to as much physical stress as allowed by their state of health and considered necessary by the doctor and trainer.
In sixteen training and two exercise groups, an individually allotted exercise therapy programme is held in the treatment rooms of the Schüchtermann-Klinik. Among other things, this includes group and water gymnastics, ECG-controlled ergometer training and relaxation exercises. In addition to the active exercise sessions, the group offers interesting information sessions on health topics at regular intervals.
WHY IS PARTICIPATION WORTHWHILE?
Members of a cardiac group find it easier than other cardiac patients to lead a healthy life. The risk factors which lead to heart disease, such as smoking, high blood lipids, overweight and high blood pressure, are reduced more effectively and over the long term in the group.
In the cardiac group you learn to assess your ability to withstand stress. For many cardiac group members, the discussions with the participants who have been members of the group for some time are interesting. Experiences are exchanged which help you to deal more effectively with your illness. Furthermore, questions on professional, family or medical problems can be answered during information events.
How to become a member?
The preconditions for an active membership in our association are the medical indication for cardiovascular training, the corresponding prescription from the attending doctor and adequate fitness. If you have the required documents and would like to become a member, please contact us.

AND IF I DO NOT COME FROM BAD ROTHENFELDE OR SURROUNDINGS?
Throughout Germany there are around 6,000 cardiac groups where more than 100,000 patients meet. There will certainly be a group close to your home which meets regularly under the direction of a specially trained exercise physiologist and a doctor with experience in the field of cardiology.
