CARDIAC SURGERY
The cardiac surgery department at the Schüchtermann-Klinik makes a significant contribution to improved care in the region of northern Germany, especially also in emergencies, in cases of impending heart attack or acute heart failure.
The cardiac surgery department covers all adult cardiac surgery with the exception of heart transplantation infive operating theatres and two hybrid theatres. Approximately 3000 heart-lung machine procedures are performed each year, as well as a further 400 emergency procedures on the major vessels, the thorax and the abdomen.
The close cooperation with the neighbouring cardiology department makes the interdisciplinary treatment of acute myocardial infarctions and the direct transfer of patients with unstable cardiac conditions from the cardiac catheterisation laboratory a key area of focus. In cooperation with the cardiology department, we implant all types of pacemakers and defibrillators (ICD). Moreover, there is continued growth in the importance of implanting mechanical heart support systems, popularly known as artificial hearts.
Cardiac surgery at the Schüchtermann-Klinik
A diagnosis of heart disease causes considerable concern for patients and their relatives. We therefore offer consultations for patients who have a condition that requires surgery. This consultation can alleviate patients’ fears and make the decision regarding treatment easier.
